Providence Grove High School Students Put Civics Lessons Into Action

Students in Mr. Moran’s Honors Civics class at Providence Grove High School are learning firsthand that their voices can make a difference!

Over the past week, students have been studying how a bill becomes a law. To extend their learning beyond the classroom, Mr. Moran challenged students to research current legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, select a bill that interested them, and write a letter to a state senator or congressman sharing what they learned.

The class recently mailed 25 letters to Washington, D.C., giving students an opportunity to engage directly in the legislative process and practice meaningful civic participation.

In previous years, Mr. Moran’s students have received responses from elected officials, making the experience even more rewarding. The class is now looking forward to seeing how many responses arrive this year!

This hands-on lesson reinforces an important message: students have a voice, their perspectives matter, and they can participate in government to help shape the future of their communities and our nation.

Through experiences like this, Providence Grove High School students are discovering that civics is more than a classroom subject — it’s an opportunity to become informed, engaged citizens.
